Water pipes break in apartment building due to cold weather

Experts say extreme weather around the world is the proof and result of global warming.

The low temperatures brought by a cold wave has broken a water pipe in a residential community in the city of Rugao in east China's Jiangsu Province, covering the stairway inside the building in ice.

The accident occurred on Saturday when water sprouted from a resident's apartment on the fifth floor and flowed down to the first floor, leaving the corridor covered with ice.

"My neighbor called and told me about water leak. I was worried that ice would form and make the stairway too slippery for people to walk on. We have already wrapped cotton inside the pipe, but the temperature is still too low," said Mr. Chen, a resident in the building.

After being informed of the accident, staff members with the water supply company immediately came to install a new water pipe and remove the ice in the corridor.

According to reports, the lowest temperature reached minus 11 degrees Celsius two days ago and many residents have reported busted water pipes.
